Bible study on Mark 6:32–44 (Feeding the 5,000)
Key Verse: “And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.” (Mark 6:44, ESV)
When Life Feels “Desolate”
Mark tells us Jesus and the disciples went to “a desolate place” (Mark 6:32). Desolate means deserted, bleak, empty—barren, devastated, ruined. Sometimes our hearts feel like that: emptied out by stress, questions, or lack.
Yet it’s precisely there—in the empty places—that Jesus loves to do His most extraordinary work.
The Scene (Mark 6:32–34)
Crowds chase Jesus into the wilderness, hungry for truth and hope. Seeing them, “He had compassion… because they were like sheep without a shepherd.” So He taught them many things (v. 34). Compassion is the spark that ignites everything that follows.
The Problem (Mark 6:35–37)
It’s late. They’re far from town. The disciples see only lack:
“Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread…?” (v. 37)
Two hundred denarii was roughly eight months’ wages—impossible money for an impossible moment. But Jesus turns the question:
“What do you have?” (cf. v. 38)
They had forgotten who was with them. They focused on the problem instead of the Provider. We do this too—naming what we don’t have, instead of bringing what we do have to Jesus.
Jesus’ Pattern of Multiplication (Mark 6:38–43)
Watch how Jesus moves:
1. Inventory: “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” (v. 38) Faith starts with honesty about what’s in your hands.
2. Order: He has them sit down in groups (v. 39–40). God often brings structure before He brings surplus.
3. Bless & Break: Jesus takes the five loaves and two fish, looks up to heaven, blesses, breaks, and gives (v. 41). What we place in His hands, He blesses; what He blesses, He multiplies.
4. Overflow: Everyone eats and is satisfied, and twelve baskets of leftovers are gathered (v. 42–43). God’s math always includes more than enough for the next step.
What You Already Have in Christ
Even when your basket feels light, in Christ you’re not empty:
· You have Jesus. “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
· You have the Holy Spirit. “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” (Acts 1:8)
· You have God-given gifts and talents. “Having gifts that differ… let us use them.” (Romans 12:6)
· You have a measure of faith. “God has assigned to each a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3)
He can take what you have—time, skills, resources, faith the size of a mustard seed—and multiply it.
From Desolate to Full
This isn’t just about bread and fish. Jesus transforms everything we place in His hands. Pray these exchanges today:
· Anxiety → Peace
· Pain → Joy
· Anger → Kindness
· Fear → Courage
· Timidity → Confidence
· Hate → Love
· Sickness → Healing
· Orphan-spirit → Adoption
· Loneliness → Friendship
“He can take your emptiness—your desolate place—and give you fullness in Him.”
Try This: Your “Five-and-Two” Exercise
1. Write down what you do have (time, skills, relationships, experience, $5, a willing heart).
2. Offer it to Jesus in prayer: “Lord, this is what’s in my hands. I give it to You.”
3. Obey the next simple instruction He gives (make the call, serve the neighbor, start the draft, apply for the role).
4. Expect God’s “bless, break, give” pattern—and watch for overflow.
5. Gather the leftovers: journal the lessons, thank God, and share the testimony.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You see my desolate places and have compassion. I bring You what I have—my little loaves and fish. Take it, bless it, break it, and use it for Your glory.
Where there is anxiety, give peace. Where there is pain, give joy. Where there is anger, give kindness. Where there is fear, give courage. Where I feel timid, give confidence. Where there is hate, plant love. Where there is sickness, bring healing. Where I feel like an orphan, remind me I’m adopted in You. Where there is loneliness, provide friendship.
Fill my emptiness with Your presence. Use my ordinary for Your extraordinary. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The Good News (For Anyone Ready to Begin with Jesus)
God loves you and wants life with you, but sin separates us from Him. So He made a way: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son…” (John 3:16) The Bible says: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9) “Now is the day of salvation.” (2 Corinthians 6:2)
A Simple Prayer: “Lord Jesus, I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again. You are Lord. Please forgive me, save me, and be the center of my life. I give myself to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
If you prayed that, welcome to God’s family. Tell someone, get a Bible, and plug into a local, Bible-teaching church. We’d love to walk with you.
Discuss & Apply
· Where do you feel “desolate” right now? Bring that to Jesus.
· What’s already in your hands? How can you offer it today?
· Where might Jesus be saying to you, “What do you have?”
· How will you “gather the leftovers”—record and share what God has done?
Are you using what you already have for God? He delights to take the ordinary you offer and do the extraordinary.
